How to protect your business from flood water damage?

Your property can be damaged by water in a variety of ways. Rain storm, flood water, formation of ice dams, sewage backup, bursting of pipes and many others are sources of water damage to your business place.

Floods can cause great damage to your business if it is in an area where floods are common.

Your basement could also get flooded with water if your sump pump breaks. That would destroy your equipment, furniture, sales products or anything else you store or keep there.

Flood can also destroy your carpeting that would need to be replaced and cost you money because mold would start to grow in the carpeting if not tended to in time. It could also grow on furniture, draperies, curtains and walls.

Flood water can also destroy electric appliances and connections that can further lead to a fire. This is why you need to take measures to avoid a flood from damaging your business but if it still happens, then you have to contact water damage cleanup.

As preventive measures, you can insert drains outside the boundary of your place so that the water does not enter your business property. Make sure to keep the drains clean of any leaves so that they do not get blocked.

You can also keep in mind to install high floor, flood protection door barrier, sandless sandbag, or a rubber water stop outside. Sump pump or foundation vents are also helpful in preventing the flood water from entering your house.

The switches and electrical outlets inside your property should be installed or placed on a higher level so that even if flood water enters the property, it would not be able to reach them and cause any further damage.

In order to check if you are buying your business place in an area where you are likely to suffer from flood, you can use a map service that would indicate the chances of flooding in that area. You should know about some of the areas on the map. These zones are:

  • Blue zones
  • Orange zones
  • Yellow zones
  • Blue with red stripes

Blue zone is the zone that is at 1% risk of flood in one year. But it is still considered a high-risk zone even if the chance of flooding is just once every 100 years. So, preventive measures should still be taken against flood.

Orange zones have a lesser chance of big flooding than the blue ones. The risk is about one time in every five hundred years. Because of the lower risk, rates of insurance are also lesser.

The risk of flooding in yellow zones is not properly confirmed. To check it, one can talk with people living in the area and do research and then make sure that the necessary arrangements are being made in the property to prevent from flooding.

The blue zones with red stripes are the regulatory courses for floods. Usually, no buildings or houses are built here because then huge measures would have to be taken to prevent the property damage from flooding.
