The CW’s Stargirl Ramps Up for Season 2
DC comic fans were quick to jump on board the Stargirl train when the series aired its first season in 2020. The show, which was originally aired on the streaming service DC Universe was later also aired on the CW and was immediately renewed for a second season after doing well in the ratings.
If you’re new to the show, go check out the first season online before the second season airs later this year. And if you’re totally clueless about who Stargirl is and what this show is all about, read on to get the scoop before you tune in.
The Premise
The show’s creator and executive produce Geoff Johns dove into the story of DC superhero Courtney Whitmore first created by Johns and Lee Moder.
In the story, Courtney is a high school student that stumbles upon the Cosmic Staff, a weapon previously belonging to another hero, Starman. The staff gifts her with a slew of powers and sets her on a course to not only become a hero herself but to inspire a whole new team of heroes to rise up against the forces of evil.
The show goes deeper into not just Stargirl, but all of the Justice Society of America (JSA). Or at least the new JSA – the first team was killed in battle a decade before the show picks up the story. Among these new JSA members are Wildcat, Dr. Mid-Nite, and Hourman. All of them the second of their names.
Courtney’s family also takes center stage. Her brother, mother, and stepfather (who has a secret of his own) play major roles in the show as Courtney comes into her own as a new hero.
Critical Reception
The show not only played well with audiences, critics like it, too. Stargirl’s first season received an impressive score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a slightly lower audience score.
Business Insider named it the top new show in May of last year. Screen Rant called the show earnest and optimistic saying it earned the adoration of its loyal audience.
The show’s success was rewarded when the CW bought exclusive in-season rights for the second season of the show from DC Universe.
What to Watch For
After Courtney and the JSA were put to the test by the Injustice Society at the end of season 1, fans were left asking questions and needing answers.
Will the Injustice Society regather after their defeat?
Is Starman here to stay?
Can the new JSA keep it together as they grow into their new roles and deal with loss?
And what is the deal with that purple and pink pen?
With an announced release date of April 1, 2021, you won’t have to wait much longer to find the answers to these questions and more. You should also expect new villains, more setbacks, and a bigger burden on Courtney’s shoulder to hold it all together.
If you haven’t yet seen season 1 of Stargirl, it is not too late to catch up before April. It is a comic book show done right with heart, humanity, and some good old fashioned heroism.
